In short
- The margin gives hints, never the finished answer.
- Answers come from your own notes and show their sources.
- Your notes are never used to train AI models.
- You can turn the margin off, per notebook or everywhere.
What the AI does
The margin uses AI for four things: checking a step in your handwritten work, writing recall questions from your notes, answering questions you write in the margin using your own notes, and planning review before an exam.
Our rules
- Hints, not answers. The margin points to a step, asks a question, and explains a method only when you ask. It does not solve new homework problems or write essays.
- Grounded in your notes. Answers to your questions come from your own pages, slides and recordings, and say where they came from.
- Honest about uncertainty. The margin can be wrong. It asks rather than asserts, and you can flag a note that missed.
- Visible. Margin notes look different from your own ink and stay in the notebook’s history.
- Optional. You can hide the margin or turn it off.
How your data is handled
- Handwriting recognition happens on your device where possible.
- To create margin notes, the relevant part of your page is sent to an AI model provider (planned: Anthropic’s Claude) under terms that do not allow your content to be used to train their models. We will request zero data retention where available.
- We never use your notes to train AI models, ours or anyone else’s.
