Privacy policy

Last updated October 16, 2026

Draft. BetterNotes has not launched. This page states our intended policy in plain language and will be reviewed by legal counsel before launch.

In short

  • Your notes belong to you. We store them to sync and back them up, and for nothing else.
  • We never sell your data and there is no advertising in BetterNotes.
  • Your notes are never used to train AI models.
  • You can export everything, or delete your account, at any time from Settings.

What we collect

Account information. Your email address, name if you give one, and how you sign in (Apple, Google, Microsoft or email).

Approximate place you signed up from. When you create an account, join the waitlist or send us a message, our hosting provider tells us roughly where the request came from (city, region and country, worked out from your IP address). We send it once to our own team inbox so we know where students are finding us. We don’t store your IP address with your account, and we never use this for advertising.

Your content. Notebooks, pages, handwriting, typed notes, imported files such as PDFs and images, and lecture recordings you choose to make. This is stored so it can sync between your devices and so you never lose it.

Website visits. We count visits to this website with Cloudflare Web Analytics (no cookies). If you allow analytics cookies, Google Analytics also helps us see which pages are useful. See Cookies.

Device and usage information. The type of device and app version you use, sync status, crash reports and basic product usage (for example, which features are used). This helps us fix problems and improve BetterNotes. It is never used for advertising.

Payment information. Purchases go through the App Store, Google Play, Microsoft Store or our payment processor. We receive confirmation of your plan, never your full card details.

Waitlist. If you join the waitlist we store your email, and optionally the device you write on and whether you are a student, teacher or parent. We use it only to tell you when BetterNotes is available, and to see roughly where interest comes from (see above).

How we use it

  • To run BetterNotes: store, sync and back up your notebooks.
  • To provide the margin: recognize your handwriting and generate margin notes, cue questions and answers from your own notes. See AI principles.
  • To support you when you contact us.
  • To keep BetterNotes secure and fix problems.
  • To send service emails. Marketing emails only if you opt in.

What we never do

  • Sell or rent your personal information.
  • Show ads or share your data with advertisers.
  • Use your notes to train AI models.
  • Read your notebooks, except when you ask us to for support, or when the law requires it.

Where your data is stored

Your notes are stored with our infrastructure providers (planned: Cloudflare for storage and sync, and a managed Postgres database for account data). Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. A list of providers will be published on a subprocessors page before launch.

Your choices and rights

  • Export all your notebooks at any time, as PDFs and in our open format.
  • Delete your account from Settings. Your content is removed from our systems, including backups, within a set period that will be stated here at launch.
  • Correct your account details at any time.
  • Depending on where you live (for example under GDPR or CCPA) you may have further rights, including access and portability. Contact us to use them.

Children and students

BetterNotes is designed for students aged 13 and older on their own. Younger students will be able to use BetterNotes only through a school account. See Student privacy.

Changes

If we change this policy in a meaningful way, we will tell you in the app and by email before the change takes effect.
